Who rules with which rules?

The Social Rules project directed by Paul Steinberg of Harvey Mudd College is a great project that shows the importance of rules and norms in every day live, especially in the context of sustainability. Besides a book, an animation they also provide a game. A great educational source.

I like the critic, but in the end it leaves me with no solution, no plan of action. “If you don’t like the rules, change them” sounds like the battle cry of both sides. That is exactly how power becomes embedded, and how power is taken – by changing the rules to “suit” me.
Every system has its constraints – not rules – and we have to build within the best we understand these constraints and whatever system of governance we have in place needs to be adaptable enough to change as these constraints change, just as we adapt to the seasons.
The previous system arose out of a particular socio-historical context. It is just no longer appropriate and is unable to manage the new dynamics that are appearing in the world.
